LYNDHURST

Lyndhurst is a large busy village in the centre of the New Forest.  There are lots of interesting shops - household names and local.  There are also a variety of good pubs, restaurants and tea shops.  Roads lead from here to all parts of the New Forest.
In the centre of the village is a good car park next to the Visitor Centre and The New Forest Museum (see web links below).  The museum has displays chronicling the development of the New Forest from 1079, when king William (the Conqueror) took the land for royal hunting, right up to the present.

Queens House in Lyndhurst is the main office of the New Forest Verderers;
The Verderers are a modern statutory body sharing the management of the New Forest with the Forestry Commission. They operate under the New Forest Acts 1877 - 1970.  Verderers control almost all forms of development in the Woods and Heaths of the New Forest and they regulate the agricultural use (exercise of common rights) in the New Forest.  The Verderers also maintain the Atlas of Forest Rights (rights of common which entitle Commoners to use the New Forest). (see web links)

Nearby can be found the "Rufus Stone" - the traditional site of the death of William II in 1100. Paleolithic implements have been found here, and there are Bronze Age barrows. The New Forest Otter, Owl and Wildlife Conservation Park
The park is set in 25 acres of ancient woodland in the New Forest. Here you will find part of Europe’s largest collection of multi-specied otters, owls and other indigenous wildlife. For over thirty years, the centre has been particularly concerned with the status of the otter and the barn owl, both of which are endangered species. They have an ongoing breeding program for all otters and owls so that captive bred stock can be released either to supplement existing diminished numbers or to re-establish a presence where they formerly thrived but are no longer found.
The otter and owl enclosures are situated on circular nature trails which meander through the ancient wooded grounds surrounding the indoor animal accommodation.
Open all year round – 10am to 6pm. Weekends only in January and February.
