Lymington
Bed and Breakfasts (B&Bs)

LYMINGTON

The town of Lymington has grown up around the mouth of the Lymington River.  The harbour is accessible at any state of tide.
The nearby salt marshes provided salt for export in Norman times.  In the middle ages Lymington became well known for its shipbuilding and trading.  Nowadays, there are 2 large marinas for pleasure craft.  There are about 12 fishing vessels - crabbers or trawlers and the main catch is shellfish, especially oysters from the beds of the Solent.
Ferries operate across the Solent to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight (35 minutes).  Cruises also operate from Lymington, with 2 hourly trips down to the Needles and the Lighthouse at the western end of the Solent.  There are also boat trips to Hurst Castle at Keyhaven.  Private fishing trips can also be arranged at short notice - see the hut office in the harbour area for fishing and cruises.

Lymington thrived in Georgian times and this is reflected in the architecture. There are many Georgian properties to be seen in the High Street which is now the venue for a regular Saturday street market where food, hardware, clothes, antiques and almost anything else is traded.
Lymington High Street has a good selection of shops, banks, restaurants etc. and can be a busy, bustling place on Saturday mornings.
